I’ve hinted in the past few posts about another crazy trip I’m due to take soon. Well, soon is fast approaching and I’m due to fly to Bangkok on August 30th for a couple of nights and then onto Bali. The reason? Another surprise!
A good friend of mine who I rarely get to see (see lives in Australia) is splashing out on a trip to Bali for her 30th birthday. A bunch of her friends are joining her including a few who are also good friends of mine who I know from my crazy days in London. It’s all timed pretty well because another couple of mutual friends are getting married that week as well and have invited me to their wedding. It’ll be a mini London reunion!
I know… going from Rwanda to Bali is slightly (ok, very) ridiculous. But I was actually originally planning to go from Rwanda to Japan to volunteer. I had been on the fence about whether to go to Japan or not for various reasons and late one night last month I decided that – screw it! – I was going. But then I emailed home, told my parents of my plans and they weren’t too impressed with the idea. My dad works in nuclear plants and he was very uneasy about me going to Japan. I guess my parents don’t want me to get radiated. They asked me nicely to please reconsider and so I did. They don’t usually do that, not even with all of the crazy places I’ve been. I think it’s hilarious that Japan was the place that got them nervous!
So, having already committed in my mind to spend the money to go to Asia, I figured I might as well change my trajectory a bit and surprise my friend in Bali for her 30th. She had told me about her plans awhile ago and I, like a responsible person, decided it was too out of the way and too expensive to consider – even though I really, really, really wanted to go. But I’ve had a bunch of great months and had my Japan plans nixed, so screw it! I’m going.
So that means I’ll be in Bangkok from August 31st just for two nights. Then I’ll be in Bali (I think the place we’re staying is in somewhere called Legian… which I guess is near or part of Kuta?) until September 10th. Then back to Bangkok and I leave for Rwanda on the 12th. So if you’ll be in any of these places at any of these times and want to meet up for a meal or a beer or a coffee… get in touch!
This whole thing is a surprise so please don’t tell Jody.

Hi Kirsty, I’ve been a lurker on your blog for a long long time but I live in Bali so felt like I had to comment! Legian/Kuta are fine for shopping and drinking/partying all night but hideous in all other aspects so pleeeeease get out and see some of the rest of Bali while you’re here. Nearly everywhere is reachable in a day trip and there are lovely places to explore. I live in Ubud so give me a shout if you’re in the area and want to meet for a coffee
Sounds like you are going to have some fun. I have always want to visit Bali but with these limited vacation days it just hasnt been feasible. Love the photo with the elephant and what do you have planned for your few days in Bangkok?
Gotta love those ridiculous trips. The freedom to mission around having adventures along the way is what got me interested in online business in the first place. Unfortunately I have to wait until Novemeber before I can pack my bags for India so I am very jealous (I love Indonesia).
If you get a chance its really worth heading off the beaten track in Bali. Ubud is nice although it is rather touristy, but there are some fantastic places nearby. I also love Nusa Lembongan, a small island a short trip away from Kuta.
I hope you have a great trip.
Sounds like a very good incentive to hop over to Bali with a short stop-over in Bangkok. Have fun!
Hi Kristy. Honestly I envy you because you have a quite no of ridiculous trips. I never had one. I hope I have opportunity like you in the future
