February, for being a short month with few ad renewals lined up, turned out pretty well with $3319 in earnings. It’s a big drop from January and December but I think those months were the freaks and coming in at above $3000 is closer to what I’m aiming for. At least as far as consistency goes. The freaky months are obviously welcome, though!
Earnings Breakdown:
- Adsense – $435 - Things often go well for the first few months or the year with Adsense. Maybe companies are spending their brand spanking new ad budgets, I don’t know. But I’m happy, whatever the reason.
- Affiliate sales – $675 - It seems like I can count on being around the $700 mark with my affiliate sales. This is the area where I think things could improve drastically but, it’s also what would take the most work. In the meantime I’m happy to have things chugging along.
- Advertising – $2117 - Not so many renewals this month but I did line up a few new ads with monthly subscription payments. I love these because I can count on a certain minimum amount each month, assuming they don’t cancel which, so far, they never do. I’ve got over $750 in monthly ads now and I would love to get that above $1000.
- Ebook Sales – $28 - Blah.
- Photography – $64 - I got a random email through my Kigali life website from some guy who works at the Brussels Airline magazine. He was after a couple of photos of Kigali restaurants so I sent him some shots. They decided to use one which is kind of cool.
Spending Breakdown:
I cut back a bit on my spending with only $900 spent this month on web stuff. My spending was spread pretty evenly across a bunch of things, rather than being skewed towards article outsourcing.
- Domain Renewal – $79 - I had a bunch of domains up for renewal plus a few new ones to add to the pile.
- Content Outsourcing – $150 - More content for my Africa website.
- Design Outsourcing – $150 - For an illustration for my Africa site. All of this is adding up but I also have to remember how good a year I had and I’d much rather invest money back into my business than send it to the tax man.
- Link Building Services – $206 - These are the monthly fees for two link building sites I’m using.
- Article Outsourcing – $275 - This was for articles to use on my link buildng networks.
- Coding Outsourcing – $40 - A bit of tweaking for the miniBB Kigali life forum.
- Ebook – $5 - Monthly cost to sell my ebook.
Depending on what my taxes tell me, March could be a big month for spending money as the UK tax year ends in April. I’m a big fan of outsourcing all of a sudden though, so that’s fine. So I’m happy these last few months have been good earners. They’ve put my savings back on track and hopefully I’ll be able to do a lot of interesting things through outsourcing.
I’d like to focus 100% on my Africa site this month but, guess what? A friend and I have decided we should ride bikes from Montreal to Haiti next year to raise $30,000 to build a community centre in Jacmel, Haiti. So… I need to work on the website for that crazy scheme. We’re looking at an August 2012 departure but we have some big ideas of engaging the Haitian communities in Montreal, New York and Miami and raising awareness as we go so we want to get a site up and running as soon as we can. Plus, having a good site with a clear plan will help us in trying to score gear donations. It’s a huge undertaking and I’ll tell you more in a post soon.
So March is looking as busy as always!

I am still sure that we will see some more “freaky” months in 2011 for you. All in all though its still a decent month for you.

Over $2000 from advertisers alone is very impressive. Looks like your doing very good with Adsense too. Keep up the good work.

I’ve been following your site for some time now, so thought it’s about time I showed my face around here!
Thanks so much for being so transparent in all you do. I’ve been living as a digital nomad for a year or so now, and am really pushing the passive income side of things, so your content is a regular source of motivation for me, so thanks for that!
I’ll be commenting more often from now on dude!!
Hi Kirsty this is really nice income!! and wow you get $2000 alone for just advertising! That’ great, congratulation. Look forward your another post!!
Wow! No wonder you can travel as much as you want. I wish I can earn more from affiliate marketing.

Another great month, despite it being a drop from December and February. If you can make more than enough to get by just from an online business, in my opinion it’s a good month.
I love the idea of a bike ride from Montreal to Haiti. That sounds awesome. I’m sure you could raise a lot of money from that. Do you find it a challenge to balance your online business efforts and your charitable work?
If you aren’t going to do an affiliate program for your book, it’s not going to sell well.
Thanks, as ever, for your transparency. Could you share how many sites you run at the moment?
Holy transparency batman…
Practical, actual numbers. good stuff. glad you are doing well. What do you think about using clickbank or something like that to market your book? Im working on one of my own doenst seem like the sales numbers are worth it…???

Those are great earning. Keep it up. I have had a good time looking through your last posts and you seem to have it all down. Are you going to settle down anytime soon, or should I say more than you have as of late.
Those are some really good earnings, Kirsty, especially in advertising. Thanks for posting them for us. The Montreal to Haiti ride looks like it’ll be something else. Keep up posted on that, should be exciting.
I like the idea of a bike ride from Montreal to Haiti.
Good going Kirsty. I like to see the steady improvement. That continues to inspire me! I’m still using an SEO and link building company and that seems to be worth it. I’m planning to try BuildMyRank next to see if that gives me a boost. Keep up the good work. And thanks for sharing.
Kirsty, those figures look great for February. My sites are also down from December earnings but look like they are finally picking back up again!

Luke
Hi Kirsty, Nomadic Matt’s comment caught my eye and I agree with him. By giving people an affiliate commission you’re encouraging them to work hard at selling it for you – and some people will do a lot to promote a good book, which yours is. I know I have included mention of your book in my ezine several times, and I have a few links to it from my site, but those books I promote as an affiliate get a lot more of my time and attention – since we all have to make a living.
I know profits go to charity but even so, most affiliates should be happy to take a little less than they usually would so that part of their own earnings can be reinvested in a non-profit… I’d be happy with that…
Hey Kirsty, when you start up a website-how long does it typically take for you to generate income from it? With regards to Advertisements and Link sales.
Cheers
Anth
@nomadic matt – I have sold over 1000 copies of my ebook, I ran an affiliate program along side direct selling, I would imagine 10 at most were sold through the affiliates!
I too had a drop last month, looking back at 6 years of trends I’d say that is quite normal.
Still I bet $3000 plus goes a long way in Africa
Wow. Would love to have a earning like that on my site. Still have a lot of work to do. So far Im only using adsense which I can see from your earnings is a big mistake.
Thanks for sharing. Really interesting and motivating read:)
