October was ridiculous! In a great way. I earned $5227, clearing the five grand point for the first time and proving to myself that I my goal of $5000+ months in 2011 is doable. So I’m obviously pretty happy!
But with the good, sometimes comes the bad. I fractured my stupid hand when a stupid motorcycle fell over with me on it. Blah! So no Uganda for now and typing is a bit of a struggle as well. So no Uganda, no guitar playing, no going to the gym, and possibly not much work because typing is a pain in the arse (and the arm). Not sure what I’m going to do with myself… it might be a good time to take up drawing again. Or French. I’ll go crazy if I don’t find something to do.
Earnings Breakdown:
- Adsense – $414 - Adsense creeped up to above $400 once again which is the direction I want it to go. I think my work on promoting my living in New York City site is finally starting to show some results, albeit small ones. I think any increases in Adsense will come mainly from the New York site, so I’m going to continue to focus on link building to get that bad boy to the front page of Google.
- Affiliate sales – $973 - My travel insurance affiliates are still paying off and the programs I have aimed at people moving to London are doing ok too. I’m adding new affiliates very slowly and not doing much to promote them so it’s good that my insurance affiliates are still paying off.
- Advertising – $3749 - Advertising went crazy in October and for the first two weeks people seemed to be throwing money at me. No idea why! I had a bunch of renewals as well. It doesn’t seem like people cancel ads. I have a feeling that finding good places to advertise is a hassle so when they find one, they tend to stick with it. That’s good news for me or anyone who has quality websites. I don’t have many renewals lined up in November so I could see a big earnings drop next month.
- Ebook Sales – $91 - I sold 13 ebooks without doing anything. I love it when that happens! It’s not a lot of money, but it’s certainly passive and I like that.
Spending Breakdown:
- Domain Names – $39 - The usual renewals.
- Link Building – $603 - Seeing my Paypal account fill up so quickly in the first half of October meant that I went a bit spending-crazy on link building. I’m using two services now and both are as easy as creating a list of links, paying some money and then outsourcing. It makes it almost too easy! I’m seeing good results so far with my New York site which has jumped from page eight to page four in a few weeks.
- Article Outsourcing – $20 - A friend of mine wrote me up some Africa content based on her travels. I’m going to be investing a lot in the coming months in content creation for this website. I’m not going to go to article websites though, I’ll be attempting to get in touch with individuals who are or have recently travelled in Africa. If you know anyone, let me know!
- Ebook – $5 - Monthly cost to sell my ebook.
I don’t have many renewals for November but I have been in touch with an interesting company with some opportunities for setting up ads. I’ll give more details once I get the deals set up but it’s a combo of banner ads and articles across several sites on a monthly basis. They need my sites on different IP addresses so it might be a good incentive to finally get that done.
So I’m super happy about my earnings in October, a bit sad about my hand (but I’ll get over it) and I guess I need to come up with some sort of plan for how to spend my time in the coming months.

Wow–huge month! Love that you keep sharing these figures. Sorry to hear about your hand, but glad to hear that you’re alright!
Well done Kirsty! You’re an inspiration. Next: $10k!
This is awesome Kirsty! I’ve been reading your blog for a little while now and have found it massively inspirational!
I’ve actually just quit my 9-5 job, moved out of my London flat and sold a ton of my stuff. Come mid December i’ll be going full time nomadic and can’t wait!!
I have a more modest initial earnings target of £500 p/m in my head. I’d be super stoked to reach that let alone $5k!
I’m documenting my adventure at http://www.digitalnomadism.com and have mentioned you in one of my initial posts btw.
Cheers!
Ryan
Hey, this is awesome! Congratulations! I’m sorry about the hand, but Uganda will still be there and perhaps getting a break from typing will free your brain for other creative projects.
Congratulations on a great result. It does however sound like you’re spending too much time working and not enough traveling!
your in depth breakdown of income is great Kirsty and Nigel is right, you’re a genuine inspiration. Your sites are great so it’s very well deserved, i hope i can make even half that through my site!! good luck and keep going =)
johnny
Wow great month Kirsty. You’re obviously doing something right to have advertisers throwing money at you like this. I think it really helps that your sites are so targeted towards a certain niche and location. Keep up the great work. All that money you’re investing back into link building will definitely pay off. Sorry to hear about your hand though.
Wow that is really impressive and you made your mark before you planned. Way to go!
Well done Kirsty. Would be interesting to read more of how you do the link building
Keep it up.
Awesome, congrats Kirsty! I feel like we’re on such similar paths, despite our different approaches (to both earning money and traveling).
“I have a feeling that finding good places to advertise is a hassle so when they find one, they tend to stick with it. That’s good news for me or anyone who has quality websites. ”
I get that feeling too. My first text link advertiser is up for renewal in November, and he dates back to December 2006!
Can you share the link building service you use, since it seems to be paying off? If you don’t want to share it publicly, just send me an email.
I’ll go ahead and post my October Earnings in a few minutes.
This is soo cool! Congrats, your monthly updates are some of my favorite blog posts.
Kirsty, I bought your book last month and I’m very impressed with it. It’s well written and presented. I’d like to sell it as an affiliate as I think you’ll get a lot of sales if you let other people promote and sell it for you as well. I have bought a few e books to see what they’re like before I sell them and some of them are really week.
Congratulations on the book and the blog.
Sorry about the hand.
Ruth
Thanks all!
@holgs Nah… I’m not in the travel mood just yet. It goes in waves. I am in the volunteering mood though so not going to Uganda is annoying. But in a few weeks, I guess.
@dave Ya I agree. When you have a great month I’m always happy for you but always use that as a motivator for me to get to work. Ya I’ve got some pretty old school advertisers as well.
@ruth Glad you like it! I’ve had a few people asking about an affiliate program and it’s on my ‘to do’ list. I’ll make a posting here when I get it all sorted out.. possibly not for a couple of months, though.
This is great news! watching you break the $5000 Barrier Wow..

The ebook sales this month is bit low but overall is fantastic job. Is this because everythign is busy because of xmas?
Congratulations on your salary for last month, great figures i am truly impressed. sorry about the hand
Well done – you bet me for the month – and I had a good month too. I am all in a travel mood at the moment and renovated my old travel site to see if at last I can make some money from passion!
Way to go – you’ve really broken out of the pack it seems. You’ve sown your seeds and now it’s time to harvest. A lesson for us all!
Hope the hand mends quickly.
Hey Kirsty,
well done on the great month, now the aim is keeping it at that level.. gives everybody hope when you see results like this that money can be earnt from the web… my own earning are now at a good level after all the hard work..
one question, are your adverts coming straight to you or are you using a network?
I need to start looking into selling ads as of now its services and adsense that are my main earners.
Cheers
steve
Wow, fantastic post! I’m about to plunge into travel writing full-time and it’s nice to see some of the actual numbers that are possible if you work hard and are good at what you do.
Thanks again for sharing this info. Really looking forward to getting a few direct advertisers myself. Keep up the good work.
Cheers!
Hi Kirsty!!! OMG way to go girl! That is awesome!!! That is definitely an awesome achievement, its amazing how far you’ve come, been watching your progress for a long time, congrats again, and I am sure there will be even bigger numbers to come. On a bad note… sorry to hear about your injury
Till then,
Jean
Wow! What a great month for you. Congrats!!!!
The earnings are superb. It really seems like people are throwing money at you! Haha…
By the way, I don’t see a lot of advertisements on your blog, do you get the advertising revenue on other sites?
Awesome but I’ll be my doggy downer self:
I think it should be clear that advertisements are link sales here. I’m surprised you still do so many as I believe you got hit by a Google penalty in the past. Really, it’s playing with fire, especially on site you want to rank high for in SEO. I do link sales on site I own that I don’t care about but if it relates SEO, I skip it. It’s not worth the risk. I’m just saying you might want to be more judicious in where you are putting links especially b/c I see the same links across your entire network.
I know people who have been really screwed by it in the past.
You are going good. I wish you get more success ahead. Your earnings’s, really superb. I inspired and will try to do alike..
Excellent blog post and very helpful information. it’s also great that you share the drivers and how that varies from the previous month. Thanks so much for your very helpful transparency and I’ll be subscribing to your RSS feed.
great results Kirsty, another great month, sounds like you need to be on good earnings in order to live in Kigali!
Hope your hand gets better soon too!
Kirsty, which ads are best performing on this blog?
effin marvellous Kirsty!
congrats for great achievement, but sorry for accident. I can feel the pain coz last year my cousin got injured and hard to live. But thanks for God for safe.
Happy for your earning , hope you keep it up more and more but ideas and works gives you a good return.
Hi Kirsty, i have been following your blog for a little while now and it has given me so much inspiration. It’s great to see your monthly earnings progress and congrats on the fantastic october earning results – well deserved
@steven The ads are mostly from SEO firms representing companies. Early on, like before last year, most ad deals were directly with the companies themselves so this is a recent switch. More and more companies are seeing the value in SEO, I suppose.
@jasmine Most of my ad revenue is spread across about 5 or 6 sites.
@nomadicmatt I know. The last five comments you’ve made on my blog have said the exact same thing. I get it.
Thanks for all the messages! The hand is on the mend. Hoping to get this cast off before I head back to Uganda.
Wow Such a great earnings , I think October month is luckiest for you, I am hoping I will also get some ……………
Very interesting to follow this, thank you for the information openness and keep up the good work!
Hi Kirsty,
I’ve been following your earnings reports for quite some time now but this is my first commment. I gotta hand it to you, $3749 from ads is some going!
Is that all from people contacting you or do you use services like buysellads?
Cheers,
Patrick.
Still trying to get my head around this number, $5000 dollars is awesome to say the least, am finally getting my ass into gear and trying to increase my earnings.
Wow this is very motivational, I am currently just trying to pay tuition with my online money, but maybe I can turn it into a full-time income. Haha I got some ideas now.
Hey Kristy, Do you find your advertiser links get in the way of your adsense earnings? Does it distract your viewers from clicking on your ads? Love the blog. Stay blessed.
John
You are an inspiration to us all. It just goes to show that with hard work and determination, it can turn out well in the end. Keep working at it and never give up on the lifestlyle you aspire to.
Hi Kirsty,
Great blog! I found it when I entered “cost of living in Kigali, Rwanda” on Google. I am currently working on a volunteers placement proposal for a UK Engineers development based organisation and I needed info on costs. The project itself will be with a photo voltaics systems company based there.
