September wasn’t close to my record month in August but it was still a good month coming in at $2624. Anytime I earn above $2500 I’m happy, at least until the end of this year. Next year I’ll set the bar substantially higher.
Earnings Breakdown:
- Google Adsense – $350 – Same ol’ same ol’. I suppose consistency is good. I’m finally putting a real push on link building for three sites that I think will do well with Google. One is my living in New York City site which is currently languishing somewhere on page seven of Google for my keywords. But it’s climbing. The other two sites are small sites about specific info that I did keyword research for. I think they have potential but time will tell.
- Affiliate Sales – $644 - My three travel insurance affiliates are still consistent which is reassuring. I don’t think I’ve had any sales from my working holidays site affiliate and another program on my moving to London site is hopeless with their reports, so who knows what’s going on there. I wish companies that offer affiliate programs would take the time to set up an area for affiliates to check their reports. but I digress. I’ll be adding a dating affiliate site aimed at Aussies, Kiwis and South Africans in London to my London site. It’s a perfect fit with my target market and I know this niche pays well so I’m curious to see how it does.
- Advertising – $1560 - Another good month in this area. Some renewals but a few new deals for around $300 each which is great. The more separate deals I can add, the more people I have lined up each month for renewals. I’d love to have five or six opportunities for renewals each month as well as fielding new ad requests.
- Ebook Sales – $70 – I did zero work on promoting my ebook and it shows in the (lack of) sales. I’m aiming to update it in a few months and I’ll introduce an affiliate program at that point as well. Until then, I’ve got too many other things on my plate to be able to focus much on this.
I’m already off to a great start in October with over $800 in ad sales today alone. I’ve got some big plans for next year and will need to start tucking some money away to finance them so I really need to keep the $2500+ months coming with the occasional doozy month thrown in for good measure. Dave over at Blog to Travel has stated that he’s going to aim to be earning $5000 a month next year and I think if he can do it, then so can I so I’ll make that a goal of mine too. I’m not too motivated by money, but I am motivated by competition!
Spending Breakdown:
I spent $722 in September which is substantially more than I’ve ever spent before in a month. I’ve decided to invest a minimum of $300 each month on link building so, along with other costs, I expect to be spending about $500-600 a month in the future. I’m only including spending that relates directly to what I do online. So things like my ticket to TBEX, travel expenses and other offline, tax-deductible expenses won’t be listed here. I prefer to leave those as a big pile of receipts on my floor until two days before my tax return is due!
- Domain Names – $90 - This was for a yearly subscription to some GoDaddy service that gives me cheaper domain name renewals and some other perks. I wasn’t planning on renewing this but I forgot to turn off the auto-renewal. Then I forgot to get in touch to cancel it. Ah well, next year I guess I’ll cancel it.
- Link Building – $307 - I’ve joined a link generation site that I might have mentioned before. I’m not totally sure just yet if it’s smart for me to talk openly about this kind of thing or if it’s dodgy. I’ll write about the results at some point soon but, for now, it’s early days. There’s a monthly membership fee of $147 plus I’ve also been using their outsourcing services to have articles written which is cheaper than Textbroker and more efficient since I just need to click a few boxes. I really love their interface and everything is made very easy. If I get the results I’m hoping for, it will be well worth the $147 a month just in the time it saves me.
- Article Outsourcing – $320 - I suppose outsourcing articles is a part of link building since most of the articles I have written go to article submission sites in an effort to build links. But some of them go onto my sites as content so I decided to keep these separate. I outsource all of my articles through Textbroker and I couldn’t be happier. Their interface is fantastic and the submissions I’ve had have mostly been very good.
- Ebook – $5 - It costs me $5 a month to sell my ebooks.
I like that I’ll be tracking my spending… it helps me keep everything in perspective and keeps me aware of what my actual profits are. It’s one thing to say I’ve earned $3000 and it’s another to say I’ve earned $3000 less $1000 in expenses. In the past I’ve kept my costs very low and I think that I could have months where I spend very little on things like link building, but I think that I’m fortunate to be in a position to throw month at these things now and hopefully give me sites a bit of an edge. We’ll see! As always, it’s all one giant experiment.

I am stunned at how much that guy on blogtotravel earns via direct advertising, I can’t figure out whether thats suppose to include affiliate sales?
Don’t worry about it kirsty. Keep doing the hard work and It will increase for you. Good luck for next month!
Hey Kirsty,
I love your earnings reports.
I tried something a couple of weeks ago, just as a test, and it’s worked out surprisingly well.
I added our TOEFL ebook to the kindle. You can do it yourself here – https://dtp.amazon.com. If you price it less than $10 then you get 70% of sales. We have it priced on kindle for about half of what we’re selling the ebook on our website, but also have done no promotion. People who find the book for the kindle do not come from our website, they’re finding it via amazon search.
Anyway sales started right away. We’ve been selling about one a day.
You should try it for a month or so and see if it’s another sustainable revenue channel.
Best,
Natalie
A pretty good stats. At least you still earn much like that. And you will earn more if your sites climbs up at the search engine rankings.
This is Fantastic for you.. only seems like yesterday when you were stuck in the $1500 range.. both you and Dave are putting me to shame
You both have the common thread of the Advertising revenue…. thinking it is time I devoted some time to that, an extra $1500 a month would be very nice…
Kirsty, was it $2624 after expenses or including expenses?
I really like your earning reports, it’s very interesting and inspiring to see how you make money on the web. Thanks!
350 just from Google adsense!!!!
Is that one site or more than one?
That is amazing.
Wow. Keep up the good work. I’m looking into alternative passive income generators… so your reports are inspiring.
I wanna congratulate to you for great earning. Keep it up, you are great blogger. Wishing you huge success ahead..
Another good month. I’m enjoying your success with the websites. Good for you!
Hi Kirsty congrats on another successful month, your goal of $5,000 will certainly be reached in my opinion, especially in 2011. I also like how you’ve started to also show us the expenses, really gives us the full reality of it all.
Till then,
Jean
Hey Kristy! You are doing a great job on your sites and you are truly my inspiration for building websites… i am a beginner and im on my third month so far and i created 20 websites so far. majority of them are wordpress, i put alot of money into the websites as far as content and links (scrape, bmd, ezine, ect). I have one affiliated program (amazon) and i also work with google adsense as well. One thing that i learned early is to outsource everything, especially the things you hate doing and are to time consuming. As far as right now the only major thing i outsource is getting my articles rewrited but now im thinking of hiring a VA (Virtual Assistant). It would be awsome for me because i can train this person to do everything for me and i will only work for hours a week. My question to you is what are your views when it comes to VA (Virtual Assistant).
@portvillahotels No, I don’t think that includes affiliates sales.
@natalie Thanks so much for that tip! I tried to register but my internet died but I’ll get on it soon. Seems easy and if the ebook comes up with Amazon searches then that’s go huge potential.
@neale I remember when I was starting to earn above $500 it was because of ad sales but it made me uneasy because there was no way of predicting when they’d happen. But they seem to be consistent and, while I’d prefer to be making that $1500 with Adsense or affiliate sales, I can’t really complain!
@uzi That’s before I took any expenses away.
@natalie I have about 15 sites, maybe 6 or which contribute to Adsense.
@nikoulaus Good luck! You seem to have jumped in in a big way. Most people aren’t so willing to invest up front. I’ll be curious to see how it all goes. As far as Virtual Assistants, I’m not against them at all and think eventually I’d go down that road for certain things. But for now I really like most of the work I do and am starting to outsource the things I don’t like. I guess VA is the next step but I haven’t thought much about it.
Those are great earnings for the month. It is good that you are able to set goals and attain them. What affiliate programs are you in?
U have earn a good amount and that is very good…
u are doing well….
Keep cheers…
Jacob
You have about 15 websites… That requires quite a bit of work maintaining them, right?
But I love your earning report. They are simply great!
These are great numbers! Best of luck continuing this and I hope I could get there as well. What’s the best strategy? A lot of small sites or a few bigger ones? What do you find working best for you?
Thanks.
I see you “attack” the IM from all directions which is great. My question is, can you make a good amount of money from affiliate sites alone say? Maybe if you had more sites? Or do you have to be involved in everything else like in your case (with your great numbers)?
Wow, amazing. I think I can hazard a guess as to which blog service costs $147 a month, so I’m looking forward to seeing how well you do with it.
To earn $2-3K a month is a big deal, even for me. You’re doing great!
I have just bought your ebook and I would be really keen to sell your book as an affiliate on my website as it would fit well. I could do a whole page to promote it. It would also help you to achieve your $10,000 goal and help me too!

Enjoy reading your websites.
cheers
Ruth
Fantastic blog, and like your domain name also! I liked the bit about forgetting to cancel your domain renewal, have done that myself. A year is just too long, gives you time to forget! You are very open about money spent on directory/article submissions, not sure this is wise though…
Hey another great report. Thanks for all the info it is very helpful, I am new to all this internet marketing and blogging. I just had a question if you do not mind, what link service are you using? I am just wondering what the features are if its $147 per month. I am currently using one which is $20
Yes sleigh beds, good point about forgetting to renewal, done that myself as well!!! LOL
Your earning reports are quite impressive I would like to do the same for my site see when is it possible for me
