I have been to Padang before, but it was before the earthquake. There are some nice places to visit around there. Samosir is also great, but about 10 hour bus ride from Padang. Flights are cheap though. If you need a break, you can always come to Bali :) I would recommend applying for a 60 day tourist visa in advance. The 30 days will go pretty quick.
