Great insight for us to use during our planning for Nicaragua. Darn, its going to be so hot and wet. Oh well, will have to face it sometime. Seems like a nice place to chill though. Looking forward to it.

Nicaragua seems to be very civilized country even though often is seen as wild and undeveloped. As far as I understand the country is one of those "must see" places where the climate is unique. I like those street markets (I had some of "that kind" near to my place of living) but I always wonder how good is the quality of food that is being sold there. And in such climate like Nicaragua (hot and wet) is not the best possible to keep e.g. meat outside fridge. I think that those chickens that are being sold on the market are dead? :) If they are there any problem with food quality?

[...] But relaxed or not, I was still uneasy about this change in my characteristic, grand-scale energy. What is an extreme telecommuter to do when she doesn’t feel like traveling? My current identity is based on travel; when someone asks what I do, I say “I travel. A lot.” My profession is secondary to where I’ve been and where I’m going. Then, a simple statement over at Nerdy Nomad that gave me the validation I needed: “I wasn’t really in the mood for traveling.” Relief—I’m not the only one! [...]

Nicaragua was actually one of my favourites in CA, although the country is fairly westernised. Would love to go back.

I had the same experience with in-home family parties in Senegal - and that's a muslim country so many ppl dont drink alcohol. Everybody dresses up, spend the whole day making food, and then they just sit down and eat in relative silence. However, in the streets and nightclubs people really know how to party, so it wasnt really an issue.

Regarding the maschismo thing in Nicaragua - I dont really know how to say this - but, my humble suggestion is that it might be correlated to the looks of the woman in question as perceived by the local male population.

Isn't it funny how two people can travel to the same place and have completely different experiences? I was there earlier in the year, and I found the machismo in Nicaragua to be the worst I've experienced--and that's saying a lot. Men groped me in the street (literally), stroked my arm when it was resting on a taxi window frame, and said really disgusting things in both Spanish and English. Now, I'm a walking target (blonde/pale) and I travel in Central America extensively so I have an extremely high tolerance, but even so, it was incredibly aggressive. The harassment got so extreme that I escaped to Guatemala. A disappointment, really, because I liked the country a lot.

I found the internet to be decent, and you're right--Leon was killer hot. I'm a northern soul, too, so the heat does not treat me well. :)
