I think that volunteering is needed everywhere even in our neighbourhood. Doesn't matter where are you from. Look around and help people that need that.

Nicaragua seems to be country that need volunteering help, but all the quick development maybe will soon make this country new economical tiger. This time in central America, I think this is possible if only democratic rules and economical freedom will be ensured. I see big potential in this country and people you have described in your blog. Maybe in few years we will see Nicaragua's rise to become well developed and rich country. I think they should put big pressure on tourism development. In such climate and wonderful nature they have everything needed to become touristic bullseye.

[...] Now in contrast is Kirsty over at Nerdy Nomad I have been following her for at least three years. She was a member of the first forum I ever joined at Working Nomad and at that stage she seemed to be living the dream, my dream, of travelling and making enough money to pay for it. Don’t get me wrong, I love Kirsty’s work dearly and her blog is excellent – but her recent post on her June earnings gave me pause, because I earned more than she did in June (including freelance income). Why was that – well I think its really simple – I have put a whole lot more work into my business especially in the last six months. Now what Kirsty is doing might well be right for her so this isn’t necessarily a criticism, after all she has been investigating free and cheap volunteering opportunities in Nicaragua where the Internet access is not so good. But building business seems to involve an awful lot of hard work in the beginning, with payoff time further down the track. Until you get the business to the level that the passive income is nicely diversified and recurring – you are vulnerable.
You've done splendid job writing about all those possibilities of making something good for the people living in Nicaragua. Allthough I'm not into travel/volunteering I must say that things You write are quite inspiring and can show the potential that lies in those kind of travel - not for taking sunbath and see landmarks but to do something that can be usefull.

Just a thought - I don't know much about volunteering but if the area is dominated by those charging lots to "place" the volunteer is their an opportunity for an ebook which provides free and low cost options?

No worries Dawn, I get that all the time. I take anything close these days. As far as a method for finding safe volunteering... I'm not sure. I'm a bit of a reckless type so safety doesn't ever really pop into my head... I usually just assume the best and that's worked so far for me. I have found that just getting to a country and asking around, talking to other travellers, or reading hostel message boards will usually give me a few leads. Then I hop online and check them out and go from there. It's possible to do a bit of research before getting to the country but the hard part is filtering through all of the admin fee people to get straight to the good stuff.

Hi Kristy!

Great and informative post. What is your method of finding safe and truly important volunteer work abroad? I would love to find some in various countries around the world, but I'm always wary of picking one without a tremendous amount of research.

Love your posts!
