Wayne's right, after spending 7 years there, I can tell you that they employ 200 people in an area where there is no employment, the income from the cruise lines in wages etc are what run the economy of Labadie (local spelling). The cruise lines most likely pay extensive insurance for their little area of Labadee and should anything untoward happen, they need to protect their investment... it's a 3rd world country...and the village of Labadie itself is so poor and terrible looking that you don't want your cruise line passengers tramping through a dump with no bathrooms, electricity etc.
All cruise lines control everything at their private resorts.

Actually your posting insn't strictly true. Royal Caribbean actually employs some 200 locals in the artisan market & walled beach.

I actually think that good internet access is the most important thing and almost the only important thing.

I am finding now after 4 years that I can still do a certain amount of work offline but I am increasingly needing to be online due to the importance of blogging, social networking and all that jazz.

So any place with reliable, fast internet is a winner....oh and sunshine of course.

Wow! Pretty amazing revelation about the cruise ship companies. Well maybe you've done your part in calling them out. If those cruise ships were dropping passengers off as real paying tourists to Haiti, that would do wonders to spur some development and kick that economy out of the doldrums. I have no illusions, but everyone has to start somewhere.

Thanks for this! Especially the part about the difference between Labadie and Labadee. Thanks mostly though for digging through the place and making sure to portray it accurately as opposed to the usual (demoralizing) fatalistic tone. I must say it's a wonder that Gonaïves would have such a great connection when it's been so hard hit by hurricanes!
