DK I think the most important things for me at this stage are cost, internet connection, and language (because I want to learn another one). Friends and festivals and events are things that will shape my long term plans but who knows if I'll make it to where I say I will. Health, safety and security and visas are things that I should pay way more attention too but being the impractical person that I am, I don't really.

It's a very good list, one that I can testify to.

It's also one that many, many people do not truly grasp. Not at least until it's too late.

This is a marketer's website that can give you insight on cities and zipcodes in the United States. Unfortunately, it's not international

http://www.claritas.com/MyBestSegments/Default.jsp

I moved to Chicago because it was a big, diverse place with an international airline on a public transportation route than ran 24 hours/day.

I moved to Uki Village in Chicago because it was cheap enough that I could pay rent and cool enough that I don't have to go far for a good cup of coffee. What neighborhood in a city can make a huge difference, too of course.

Ah... not that the choice is already overwhelming...

Having a base of friends in your new location is essential. It really helps to ease your transition to the new location. It also helps to introduce you to lots of different activities that local are involved with.

The main thing for me is to stay somewhere large enough to have like minded people around. For instance some places in Spain are ideal but offers little in the way socially because they are geared to retired or families.

Pretty much any big city would do, but I particularly feel comfortable in Bangkok (where I am now) because of the many other odd folk around doing something different with their lives.
