I was pretty surprised at how much I enjoyed travel with a friend, despite not being able to have time to myself. I guess it really depends on who you end up with as a travel buddy and how compatible you are.

Nice article Kristy. I included it in a post over at BootBlog: Should I travel solo?

I find it interesting that you say you’re more open to meeting people when you’re with a friend. I’m totally the opposite: I’m not a naturally outgoing person, so I really only reach out to other travelers when I get too lonely on my own. But I’ve made some amazing friends on my solo trips, so we do kind of end up traveling with friends either way.

You make a lot of good points! I usually travel solo but not always – I do sometimes travel with someone and I’ve experienced most of the above. BUT – I’d still rather go on my own, despite the advantages. I just find that solo travel rarely means traveling on my own – mostly it means traveling with a greater variety of people, with travel partners changing with each destination.

What it really means is that I’m traveling solo as a rule, adding companions to my trip as I go along and when I like. When I travel with someone, being alone – which I often need to do – is a lot harder. I still prefer the solo route.
