Blogging on the Weekend and An Experiment in Karma

Published by Kirsty at 10:27 pm under Random Ramblings

I’ve noticed that posts made on weekends tend to get fewer comments. Maybe my weekend posts are super crappy? I don’t know. I think it has more to do with people reading blogs from work where they’re chained to a desk. On the weekends people tend to flee their computers which means less blog reading.

Not having a nine to five type job, I completely lose track of what day of the week it is and have never thought about saving my posts for mid week. But maybe I should fall in line with the rest of the world? It’s always nice to get comments and whacking up a post on a Saturday followed by another one before Monday rolls around means that it gets sort of hidden away. Switching to a Monday to Firday type blogging schedule it might also be a good way for me to keep track of the days of the week. Although I have to admit, it’s kind of nice not knowing.

On a completely unrealted note… I got a message from my Couchsurfing buddy John who has some free Olympics tickets to give away. He doesnt want anything in return, but he’d like you do a good thing for someone else in return.

I really like this idea. Some of these Olympics tickets are going for crazy amounts. I played poker last night with Finnish guy who paid 1700 euros (EUROS!) for an athletics ticket where his countryman is favoured to win at the javellin throw. That’s a lot of money to watch a guy throw a pointy stick! I love seeing people who aren’t tempted by the almighty buck and would rather have that warm and fuzzy feeling by doing something nice.

Kudos John, let us know who you decide to give your tickets to and what sort of good deed they have up their sleeve.

It seems to be the case that a lot of people surf the net from their office. My traffic usually jumps up on mondays with a steady decrease towards the end of the week. Saturday seems to be the worst day.

Yep, there is a dip in traffic for me also on weekends. I think also the kind of people who link to your site and write comments do so Mon-Friday.

If you have a great idea for a blog post, it is better to put it up Tuesday or Wednesday in my opinion.

I’m not sure this post can be used as a metric for weekend commenting now that you’ve brought it to our attention.

Thanks for the link, 1700 Euros is ridiculous!

Yup, weekends are just slower. I think you’re right - it’s because people are at work Monday to Friday reading blogs instead of doing what they’re supposed to. :)

I usually post something light for a Saturday, and then just leave it for the weekend crowd. If I feel inspired and write something good over the weekends I only post it on Monday morning.

By the way - I agree - kudos to John!! That is a GREAT idea!!

So it’s the “Pay It Forward’ idea for Olympics tix. Now up to 5 comments on a weekend post. Not bad.

    you play poker? excellent.

I notice i get fewer comments and readers on the weekend. I use the weekend to post “easy” things….things that don’t take ages to read. I think a lot of it has to do with the fact most people check their blogs at work and on the weekend, they go out. but give something to those readers who read on the weekend…like me!

I think that people stuck at a desk sometiems use blogs to escape durring their work day.

Me? I read most of my blogs on Sun/Mon and get them via RSS…

Yes, it’s an escape, particularly if these are blogs about travelling and working in cool places.

I get quite a huge difference in comments and hits over weekends.

You’re definitely right about people reading while chained to their desks (doing it right now!)
