Free WiFi Is My Friend

Published by Kirsty at 9:26 pm under Travel

I’m sitting here at Friendly’s Hostel in Manila on the roof and taking full advantage of their free wifi connection while I wait what feels like an eternity for my room to be ready. I’m stupidly tired so I’m not sure how productive I’m being but it’s still nice to be able to fill up waiting time with something semi-productive.

I tried to work on the long flight from London to Hong Kong but was sabotagued by the girl in front of me wanting to have her chair as far back as possible. It was all up in my face! I was able to keep it open but the keyboard was pushed into my stomach and the typing stance I had to adopt looked pretty ridiculous and was definitely not ergonomically correct! But what can ya do.

So I’m here, I’m stinky, I’m tired and I’m hoping sleep and a shower is on the horizon. So far so good on the work front though and if this free wifi in hostels thing is common then I should be laughing.

Hey, I found your site by reading Webby’s blog. Looks like you’ve come a long way since your posts over there. It’s inspiring to see people succeed, keep it up!

So how long are you going to be in the Philippines for?

there’s nothing worse than someone putting their seat back the moment the flight levels out and then keeping it there for the rest of the flight. i’ve seen some air rage with people almost coming to blows over it in the past. at least you probably had a half decent seat pitch -i flew to egypt recently on thomas cook and being 6′3 it was a bloody nightmare for 5 hours with their tiny seats…

Ya Matt I know, I feel the same way when I read about others have success. It’s really inspiring and motivating to know that there are people out there who started at the same level as me, just as clueless and are making double or triple what I am now. It’s great for them and the little push I need to get off my arse!

Mike the original plan was six weeks but now it’s looking like it’ll be a month. I put my passport in today for a Bangladesh visa so my flight out there will be Feb 11th unless I chicken out. I’m aiming to be in Beijing early April. When do you think you’ll be back there? Do you still have your apartment from before?

I’ve been out of the loop for a wee while having a holiday and getting my new home sorted in Roatan (Caribbean arrival set for Feb 17th, yay!!) but really pleased to see you’ve arrived in Asia and are finding Wifi is your friend. Look forward to reading about your adventures too!

Take it easy and hope you’ve had some good rest.

Kirsty - Congrats on taking off. I am very envious!

Keep track of where the hotspot hostels are - It would make great site content and would be of interest to those of us wanting to pursue that track…

Your hostel is so close to Roxas Blvd. that you wouldn’t want to miss more WiFis almost anywhere there…even in the parking lots. Two days ago while waiting for my cousin at the parking lot, my nephew was ecstatic to find a hot spot and he was able to call me here in CA using Yahoo Messenger I believe. That goes the same way in Makati and other places where there are a lot of businesses.

Actually Roxas Blvd. has the Cultural Center that you might want to check out–sometimes they have scheduled activities and exhibits. There’s the new Mall of Asia and many more…don’t forget Fort Santiago in Intramuros. These are just around your hostel (noy to mention the casinos).

Always proceed with caution to say the least–have fun!

I am still in Australia. I must book my ticket soon. I am going to spend a couple of months traveling before arriving in Beijing. Unfortunately, I don’t have that apartment, but I am fairly confident I will be able to get something similar when I get back there.

I am getting itchy feet as well, the nomad in me is coming out but I am happy in NZ and must stick it out! Does n’t help that some of my flatmates are going off soon on their travels.

Congrats on the start of your journey!
