I didn't even think of that even though I spent time in New Zealand building website in exchange for accommodation. You would need to stay on-site anyway, in order to get to know it and take pictures and interviews. When I was looking into it I learned that what the charities have aplenty is access to cheap manpower. Just saying it cold be an alternative way to volunteering, using your specialization.
